It is with deep sorrow and profound love that we announce the passing of Mary Ellen Rivera, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, who left us on November 15, 2024 at the age of 90!! She was a woman of grace, strength, and unwavering devotion to her family and friends.
Mary Ellen was born on June 15, 1934 in El Paso, TX and she was a proud mother of four daughters: Monica, Gigi, Gabriella and Sonia. She also cherished the role of grandmother to seven grandchildren, whose lives were enriched by her love, wisdom, humor and constant presence in their lives. Her family was her greatest joy, and she took immense pride in watching her children and grandchildren grow and thrive.
As a teacher for 39 years, Mary Ellen dedicated her life to educating others. She touched the lives of countless students over the years, instilling in them not only academic knowledge but also the values of kindness, perseverance, and integrity. She was a pioneer in the Bilingual Education program for EPISD.
Mary was known for her warmth, kindness, unwavering faith and love of travel. She loved cooking for her family, gathering with family and friends, and being a part of the altar society for St. Patrick Cathedral. In retirement she enjoyed playing team tennis, crocheting especially for her grandchildren, reading and taking continuing education classes at UTEP. Her bright smile, love of coffee, Italy and all things sweet will be remembered joyfully.
Mary Ellen is survived by her children: Monica De La Torre, Gigi(Jim) Harris, Gabriella(Henry) Ocañas and Sonia Rivera, her grandchildren Jacob De La Torre, Cristina De La Torre, Andrea Ocañas, Matthew Ocañas, Austin Harris, Sarah Harris, and Mimi Harris, her sister Cristina Williams, and a host of nieces, nephews, and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Enrique Rivera, her parents Jose and Maria Carrillo and her sister Alicia Blanch.
Visitation for Mary will be held Monday, December 2, 2024, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM with Rosary at 6:00 PM at Martin Funeral Home West, 128 North Resler Drive, El Paso, TX 79912.
Funeral Mass will be Tuesday, December 3, 2024, at 9:30 AM at St. Patrick Cathedral, 1118 N Mesa St, El Paso, TX 79902. Graveside service will follow at 11:00 AM at Fort Bliss National Cemetery, 5200 Fred Wilson Ave, El Paso, TX 79906.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation.
Mary Ellen’s legacy of love, dedication, and kindness will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her. She will be deeply missed but forever cherished.
