Martha was the first of six children, raised in Segundo Barrio, where she attended St. Ignacio Elementary, and graduated from Loretto Academy in 1950.
Martha worked happily at the Union Furniture Company in downtown El Paso, where she formed endearing lifelong friendships and began her love for traveling. California and Mexico were her favorite destinations. Whether by train, car or bus, she had many adventures to share with all who knew her. She was also a member of several social clubs, and attended many events and dances. This is where she met Porfirio Rivera.
Martha married Porfirio and welcomed three children, Richard, Sandy, and Jenny. Martha’s strong Catholic upbringing was instilled in their children, and will live on as their moral compass. Now a family of five, the summer vacations included National Parks, Disneyland, the Grand Canyon, Mount Rushmore and many other historical landmarks. During her children’s school years, Martha enjoyed being a member of the PTA, Girl and Boy Scout helper, and always signed up for Homeroom Mom.
As years passed, the Rivera family grew to include daughter-in-law Consuelo, and sons-in-law Cesar and Michael. As well as several nieces, and nephews. One of Mom’s greatest joys was becoming a grandmother to Sonya, Richard, Matthew and Lauren. A few days before her passing, she was so very fortunate in becoming a great-grandmother to Andrew Ryan.
Mom found happiness in family gatherings, weddings, birthdays, baptisms, and anniversaries, these special events were among the most celebrated. Mom also enjoyed outdoor outings, annual pilgrimages to Mount Christo Rey, picnics and camping were also among her treasured memories.
As the Flores family matriarch, Mom was the source of all family information. She had an incredible memory that would allow her to recall so many details. She could look at a photo and tell you, who, what, where and when it was taken, and most likely, the weather that day. Even at the end, Mom’s mind was as sharp as ever. She remembered it all.
Mom’s love and guidance, will continue to be celebrated among family and friends for years to come.
It is asked that you join her family in celebrating their Mother’s life.
