Luis Roberto Alvarez passed away on January 19th, 2016 in League City, a suburb of Houston, Texas. Luis (Beto to family) was born in Torreon, Coahuila, Mexico on September 25th, 1937. His parents were Newspaper Editor and Publisher Luis Raul Alvarez and Juanita Mireles de Alvarez. The family moved to Monterrey shortly after his birth and then to Juarez, Mexico, upon his father’s death in 1947. He resided in El Paso from November 1955 to January 2013, when he moved to Houston to join his two daughters. Luis attended El Paso Technical High and worked for Tony Lama Boot Company. After obtaining U.S. citizenship and serving in the U.S. Army, he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Texas at El Paso. He then began his civil service career at White Sands Missile Range (WSMR), worked at Fort Bliss as a computer research analyst and retired in May 1996 with 32 years of combined Military and Civil Service. Luis enjoyed working on home projects, computers, gardening and spending time with his daughters and grandchildren.
He was preceded by death by his loving wife of 27 years, Maria de Jesus Muela de Alvarez, infant son, Luis R. Alvarez, Jr., and brother, Dr. Juan Alvarez. He is survived by daughters Luzmarie Alvarez and Susan Alvarez Maldonado, three grandchildren, Daniel, Francisco, and Camila, and three sisters, Dr. Maria Luisa Alvarez Harvey, Lilia E. Keitges, and Maria Magdalena Aigner. Luis attended Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church and was a 10 year active member of the Friendly Senior Center in El Paso. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 27, 2016 from 5:00-9:00pm at F.D.A. Martin East, with vigil at 7:00pm. Funeral mass will be on Thursday, January 28, 2016 at 9:45am at St. Raphael Catholic with interment to follow at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
