Lucille Judith Myers was born in Central, NM, on April 30, 1924, where she attended elementary school. She attended high school at St. Mary’s Academy in Silver City, NM. Lucille’s lifelong passion for music was ignited when she studied piano with her first teacher, Mabel Prager, and gave her first piano recital at the age of eight.
Lucille met Ross Capshaw at the China Buffet, a club owned by her father, Kenneth “Red” Myers. Ross needed a pianist for his jazz combo. While mentoring her in jazz style piano music, Ross kissed her. The rest is history!
Lucille and Ross married at a young age, which led to some turbulent times. Their love for each other gave them the resilience to weather the storms. They had three children, Ida, Randy and Kenny. Their children have individually dedicated their lives to the calling of music performance and education.
Lucille continued to play outstanding jazz piano throughout the years with her husband Ross at her side. Ross’ service in the navy during World War II led them to California, where she was wartime “Rosie the Riveter.” After the war, the family settled in El Paso, TX.
Lucille continued her piano studies with the iconic Claude Herndon while she, in turn, gave piano lessons to countless students, including many of her own grandchildren. She tirelessly worked to support her children in many ways including sewing their clothes during tough economic times. Nevertheless, she always found a way to ensure that her children studied music with the finest teachers. One of life’s little ironies is that while Lucille’s tacos and enchiladas are still considered legendary, she never truly enjoyed cooking.
At 100 years young, Lucille continued to play the piano daily. She has been an inspiration to many, including her three children, eleven grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, and two great great-grandchildren.
Lucille has always had a passion for life, people and music. Celebration of Life will be Wednesday, July 17, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of St. Clement, 810 N. Campbell, El Paso, TX 79902. Memorial contributions can be made to the scholarship created in her name at the University of Texas at El Paso, Department of Music.
The family would like to give a heartfelt note of thanks to her last caretaker, Alicia, and the dedicated nurses with Hospice of El Paso.
