Jose Angel Ramos, 79, passed away on Tuesday, 31 August 2010 in El Paso, Texas. He was born 9 December 1930 in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico and was raised there before entering the Army on 18 July 1951. Jose served with distinction for thirty years before retiring on 18 June 1981 at Fort Bliss, Texas at the rank of Command Sergeant Major. His duty assignments included Korea, Germany, Panama, several stateside bases, and a tour in Vietnam (1967-1968). His awards included the Bronze Star and Legion of Merit. Jose continued his service to the nation by working an additional fifteen years as a Department of the Army Civilian at Fort Bliss, retiring in 1997.
In 1950, he met his future wife, Rosa Julia Aldecoa, (known as Ottin to her many friends), after four years of dating and courtship, were married and on 5 June 2010 celebrated 56 years of blissful marriage.
Jose was a devoted husband, father and friend. He was noted for selfless service, his sense of humor, a desire to always do the right thing, his collection of Hot Wheels, and especially his love of music. He was active in the community, serving as a Little League baseball coach at Fort Dix, New Jersey and the Panama Canal Zone and volunteered as an umpire in the El Paso Northeast Youth Opti-Ball League.
He was preceded in death by his mother Juana Ramos and grandchildren Jose A. Ramos III and Keith J. Browning.
Jose is survived by his wife Ottin, his three children and their families: Jose A. Ramos, Jr., wife Maureen, William Ramos, wife Christa, and Jo-Ann Marie O'Neal, husband Rodney. Also, ‘Wello/Opa’’ is survived by his six grandchildren: Tommy, Marco, Aarron, wife Mariel, Joshua, Leonardo, Caitlyn and one great grandchild, Devyn. He will not be forgotten by his ‘adopted’ grandchildren: Ricky, Karen, and Marayah. Jose will be missed by his family, Soldiers, and the many friends he made throughout his 79 plus years of life.
A memorial visitation with the family will be on Tuesday, 7 September 2010 from 5:00 to 9:00 PM including a Rosary at 6:30 PM at Funeraria Del Angel Kaster-Maxon & Futrell Funeral Home located at 8817 Dyer St.
A service will be held at the funeral home, Wednesday, 8 September 2010 at 10:00 AM with internment at Fort Bliss National Cemetery at 11:00 AM with full Military Honors.
