He grew up in Staunton, VA, Appomattox, VA and Washington, DC. He joined the Army at 19. After Lennetta passed away in 1988, he married Carolyn Forrest Abbott in 1996. He is survived by his wife, brothers Shelton and Don of Owings, MD and Washington, DC, three grandchildren, four stepchildren, five step grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
He retired from the Army in 1981 after serving 25 years in the U.S., Germany, Japan, Thailand and South Korea. He helped build the Bangkok Bypass Road in Thailand during the Vietnam War where he saw wild tigers and massive python snakes during construction. His main duty station was Fort Bliss, Texas. He lived out his remaining days in El Paso, Texas enjoying retirement, fishing, boating, hunting, collecting guns and fishing rods and crafting leather gun holsters.
John will always be remembered for being easygoing, his natural kindheartedness and his great sense of humor. Being a career Army man, he rose early, kept his shoes shined daily, dressed sharply, and kept his vehicles immaculately clean. He gave great advice and lived a life of dignity and joy. He is loved and will be missed forever. Our super hero has gone fishing in heaven.
Graveside Service for John will be held Friday, August 23, 2024 at 2:30 PM at Fort Bliss National Cemetery, 5200 Fred Wilson Ave, El Paso, TX 79906.
