Dr. Pete Carroll, 89, of El Dorado, Arkansas, passed away on October 5, 2021. He played many roles in his life as a mentor to those in the medical profession in addition to his friends and the shepherd of his family. His loss will be felt by many.
He attended Louisiana Tech and the Louisiana State School of Medicine New Orleans. He did his residency in Nashville, Tennessee and heard many classic country artists play at the Ryman and the Opry. He was certified in Family Medicine. He could have chosen a more lucrative specialty but he only wanted to tend to folks in rural communities.
He served in the United States Air Force from 1957-1959, then went into practice in Bernice, Louisiana from 1959 until 1972. After moving to El Dorado and opening his practice he also served as AHEC South El Dorado residency director 1989-1999. After returning to AHEC he practiced until his retirement in 2019 after over 60 years as a doctor.
He is survived by his wife Suzanne, children Tammy Carroll Miller (Phil) and Judge Robin Carroll, bonus daughter Leslie Carroll, grandchildren Austin (Natalie), Morgan (Dakota), Pete (Holland) and Jessica and a great-granddaughter, Allie Carroll. Also many relatives in both the Carroll and Copeland families.
He is predeceased by his parents Charles and Julia, and his son Jeff. He was the last of his other five siblings. Also his beloved Scottish Terrier, Sarge.
The family wishes to extend special thanks to the caregivers: Earlene Watts, Charles Davis, Joanna Hill, Mary Jane Gregory and all the doctors and staff at MCSA.
Dr. Carroll came from a lineage of Carrolls who were committed to racial justice in the rural South. After integrating the waiting room in the hospital in Bernice he had a cross burned in his yard. He tended to all patients regardless of race or ability to pay.
His service will be this Friday at 11 am at the First Presbyterian Church of El Dorado. Per church policy masks are required. Memorials may be made to the church or the UAMS Peter J. Carroll Scholarship Fund.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.youngsfuneralhome.com for the Carroll family.
