Jerry Dean Whittington

Died: October 7, 2022

Jerry, aka Butch, passed away peacefully in San Diego on October 7, 2022 with his wife of 62 years by his side. He was born at his aunt’s cottage in Mission Beach in San Diego, CA while his mom was visiting from Brawley, CA. Jerry grew up in Brawley and married his high school sweetheart, Phyllis, in 1960 while still in high school. He graduated from Brawley Union High School in 1961. Jerry and Phyllis welcomed their son Josh in 1960 and their daughter Denise in 1965. Jerry was a reserve Deputy Sheriff for a number of years before the family moved to San Diego in 1968.

Jerry had a major accident in 1969 while working for the cable company, suffering a traumatic brain injury. Following many months in rehab, Jerry was able to work a parttime job doing maintenance at Loma Riviera condominiums in Point Loma, which he retired from in 1994.

Jerry and Phyllis moved to Spring Valley in 1991, where they resided on Jerry’s death.

Jerry loved hunting, fishing, and camping. The family spent many vacations camping in the local San Diego mountains.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Columbus “Chris” Whittington and Dorothy (Wallace) Whittington, his son Josh Whittington, and his sister, Marilyn Sue (Whittington) Tuck.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis (Clark) Whittington, his daughter, Denise (Whittington) Harris, his grandson, James Harris, III, and his granddaughter, Rachel Harris.

Graveside services Thursday, October 27, 2022 at 11am at Riverview Cemetery, 4700 Hovley Road, Brawley, CA. Luncheon to follow.
