Walter Johnson Ebanks

Our father, Walter Johnson Ebanks passed peacefully on September 16, 2024, in Edmonton, Alberta. He was born in San Francisco, Cuba on May 1, 1936, the fifth of Edna and Albert Ebanks’ eight children, and the last one born in Cuba. His family migrated to Jamaica when he was 5 years old and he lived there until he migrated to England in 1956. After being in England for several months, he sent for his girlfriend, Rosetta (Rose) to join him. They were married on August 8, 1956, and went on to have 5 children – Josephine, Burnadene, Sonia, Roger, and Eddy. Dad also had two other children, Dawn and Peter who live in England and Canada respectively. During his time in England, he served in the British Army – an experience we were all very proud of and he always talked about.

Dad immigrated to Canada in 1977 and was later joined there by his wife Rose and their sons, Roger, and Eddy. They lived and worked in Edmonton happily for many years surrounded by the loving and supportive families of his sister Ellen and brother-in-law, Ed, and his brother Ralph and sister-in-law Monica and many friends. As the years went by his daughters, Josephine, Burnadene and Sonia also immigrated to Canada to join them.

Sadly, his loving wife, Rose, and their first child, Josephine, predeceased him - Mom on January 1, 1992 at the age of 54, and Josephine on April 21, 2007 at the tender age of 50. He was also predeceased by many other friends and family members including his parents Albert and Edna; his second wife, Laurie; two siblings, Wilfred and Barbara; and most recently his beautiful granddaughter, Tiffani, who was laid to rest in May of this year.

While we are all very sad at our father’s passing, we are extremely grateful for the many years we had together, the love, the laughter, and the memories we shared. His request is that we cry for him for a moment and then move on with our lives making the best of the life we are given.

A viewing will be held a Memories Funeral Home, 13403 St. Albert Trail, Edmonton, AB on Thursday, October 3, 2024 at 11:00 AM.

A celebration to honour Walter’s life will be held a Memories Funeral Home, 13403 St. Albert Trail, Edmonton, AB on Thursday, October 3, 2024 at 12:00 PM with a graveside service to follow at Northern Lights Cemetery, 15203 Campbell Road NW Edmonton, AB at 2:00 PM.

A catered reception for relatives and friends to meet with the family will follow the graveside and will be held at Memories Funeral Home, 13403 St. Albert Trail Edmonton, AB.
