Born in Trochu, Alberta, Steve spent his early years in Three Hills and completed most of his schooling in Calgary. Steve is survived by his daughters, Ann and Stephanie; his son, David; and his grandchildren, Dustin, Kyle and Meagan. He is predeceased by his father, mother and brother, Alex.
He received a B.Ed.; and M.Ed. from the University of Alberta and with support of a Johnson Foundation Fellowship he received a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois. He joined the University of Alberta in 1961 and retired in 1994. For 20 of his 33 years of teaching at the University of Alberta, Stephen was also responsible for the operation of the Division of Educational Research Services. This facility provided graduate students and academic staff with computer-based statistical services as well as computer-assisted instructional services to many different faculties.
In recognition of his research work, he received the Researcher of the Year award from the Canadian Educational Research Association in 1976, and the Jubilee Medal for his contributions to the works of various associate committees of the National Research Council. He also served on many university committees in numerous different faculties as well as on the University Board of Governors (1980-1983). In 1987, the University of Alberta designated him as a Distinguished University Professor.
A Funeral Service for Stephen will be held at 10:00 am on Tuesday, March 21, 2023 at Hainstock’s Funeral Home, 9810 34 Avenue, Edmonton AB. Interment will be held at South Haven Cemetery, Edmonton AB.
