We are saddened to announce that our dear Mom, Joy, passed away peacefully in her sleep at Canterbury Haven on December 9, 2024. Predeceased on April 9, 2020 by her loving husband John, Joy will be dearly missed and forever remembered by her children David (Barb), Heather, Glenn (Patti), and Nancy (Brad); her grandchildren Stephen, Brittany, Anna (Scott), Brian (Amanda), Cam (Maddy), Jill (Serena), Matthew, Scott, and Lauren; and her four great-grandchildren Aiden, Freya, Ben, and Talia. She will also be fondly remembered by many extended family members.
Born on July 8, 1927 in Fort Qu’Appelle, SK to Sybil and Ernest Strudwick, Joy grew up with her three older brothers on the family dairy farm and moved to Edmonton in 1949. Joy and John met while working at Woodward’s and married in 1951. They raised their four children and lived for 30 years in the home they built in the Valleyview neighbourhood. In 1981, Joy, John, and Nancy moved to North Vancouver through John’s promotion at Woodward’s. Dance partners through 68 years of marriage, they shared life’s milestones with family and friends and loved time spent with their nine grandchildren. They moved back to Edmonton in 2017 to be closer to family and resided at Canterbury Court.
Joy was a devoted wife and mother and a proud and skilled homemaker who loved her family deeply. She was an excellent baker, a dedicated ironer, and an avid gardener. She also enjoyed volunteering with and for her church ladies group, playing bridge, vacationing with John especially in Jasper, Maui, and Palm Springs, swimming in a lake or the ocean, and visiting with friends and family.
We will remember Mom, Grannie, Joy as a loving, generous, kind, and caring person who had a bit of stubbornness and enjoyed a good tease.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to the staff at Canterbury for their kindness, compassion, and care over the past seven years.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Cystic Fibrosis Canada in Joy’s memory.
