Jerry was born in Weyburn, Saskatchewan, on August 9,1940, to Ethel and Clifford Mitchell. He was raised and attended school in Regina with his younger brother, Donald, and sister, Myrna.
In 1961, he married the love of his life, Joan Prior. They raised their two sons, Leonard and Robert, in Regina until 1971 when the family moved to Edmonton. Jerry worked as a long distance trucker and safety advisor for the transportation industry. He also operated his own trucking business for many years. After he sold his business, Jerry went to work for Western Rock Bit and eventually retired in 1996 due to health issues.
After Jerry retired, he met daily with a group of friends at the local pub for a coffee or a beer. He really enjoyed these visits and continued them right up to his passing.
Jerry and Joan travelled to Hawaii, Las Vegas, San Francisco, as well as other places but they always loved going back home to Saskatchewan to visit family and friends. They also loved spending time in their backyard. They enjoyed gardening, watching, and feeding the birds and laughing at the antics of the squirrels. Jerry was a true animal lover and was especially fond of dogs. It wasn't unusual for him to bring home a stray dog, or wounded animal or bird.
Jerry is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Joan, his sons Leonard and Robert (Karen); grandchildren Ryan, Candice (Ryan), Chantel and Desiree; and great grandchildren, Hunter and Beau. He was predeceased by his mother Ethel, father Clifford, brother Don, sister-in-law Liz, brother-in-law Bob, mother-in-law Connie, and father-in-Law Carl.
Jerry talked fondly of a beautiful lookout spot in Yoho National Park. A private family memorial will be held on that spot to celebrate Jerry's life at a future date. In the spring friends are welcome to attend a tree planting ceremony in Jerry's memory.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.memoriesfuneral.com for the Mitchell family.
