Robert Scott

Born in Norman, Oklahoma on July 7, 1947, Rob was raised by his parents Elizabeth Rowe and Lawrence Vernon Scott. He was the first-born grandson of Lawrence Garfield and Mabel Grace Madden Scott of Anthony, Kansas.

Rob spent his early years in Baltimore, Maryland, as his mother's best friend, while his father completed his graduate studies at The John's Hopkins University. Upon moving to Oklahoma City, he attended school and was reared in Crown Heights Christian Church, where he was baptized by Rev. J. Clyde Wheeler. Rob graduated from Putnam City High School in 1965, serving as class Vice-President. He studied at Colorado State University and transferred to Oklahoma State University for his B.S., before earning a Master’s Degree and Ph.D. Degree in Linguistics from the University of Texas (Austin).

Rob married Janette Marie Points in 1969. Their son, Geoffrey Levi, was born in 1975. Rob, Janette, and Geoffrey moved to Philadelphia, Mississippi soon after Geoffrey’s birth. In Philadelphia, Rob’s linguistic skills were utilized and his love for Native American culture blossomed while he worked on the Choctaw Reservation. In this community, he became active in the United Methodist Church. After a few years, the Scott family returned to Austin, Texas where Rob’s career in education began. He worked for the Texas Education Agency (TEA) for 20 years. He then became Deputy Director of the Region 12 Education Service Center in Waco, Texas. During his education career, Rob was also a 20-year veteran for the Army Reserves. Upon retirement, Rob and Janette moved to Lubbock, Texas to be near their son and his family. While in Lubbock, he formed the consulting company High Plains Consulting. In 2012, they moved to Edmond, Oklahoma to enjoy time with his siblings and cousins.

Childhood time with his grandmother, Juanita Rowe, in Okemah, heavily influenced his life, with much time spent in the library and hearing about Woody Guthrie. His teenage summers with his cousin Lois Overman Lebeda and her husband Ernie, on the farm near Renfrow, Oklahoma, brought Rob a relationship with family he always loved. He spent his last several Thanksgiving celebrations with these cousins. Rob and Janette enjoyed Easters at San Felipe de Neri in Albuquerque, New Mexico, spiritual retreats to Chaco Canyon, and yearly trips to Crow Canyon for archeological digs. Rob loved to learn and to share his learning. He taught many Discipleship classes and Sunday School at Mayflower Congregational UCC Church, Oklahoma City. His faith was strong and constantly growing.

He leaves behind his wife of 46 years, Janette (Points) Scott; his son, Geoffrey Scott and daughter-in-law, Krista; four grandchildren, Keagan, Korbin, Kasen, and Kambri; his sister, Jean Elizabeth Scott Gauldin "Jeannie", and brother-in-law John Gauldin; his brother, Larry Scott and sister-in-law Nancy; and two nephews, Austin Scott and Dylan Scott. He also leaves behind many cousins, colleagues, and friends.

Family burial service was held on Wednesday, January 27, 2016, at 11am at Highland Cemetery in Okemah, Oklahoma. Memorial worship service and celebration of life was held on Wednesday, January 27, 2016, at 5pm at Mayflower Congregational UCC.
