Loretta Ann DeLong, age 87, formerly of Sequin, TX, passed away on December 8, 2024, from Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Loretta was born on February 21, 1937, on Ft. Sam Houston, in San Antonio, TX to Myrtle Margaret Chenault and Wilbert Michael Becker. Loretta moved to Edmond, OK to live with her daughter Pam and son-in-law Jim, following the death of her husband Marvin.
Loretta enjoyed sewing and was truly talented, making formal gowns, slipcovers, and drapes. She also enjoyed spending time with family and friends, traveling, reading and doing crossword puzzles. She loved watching HGTV, Magnolia Channel and the Hallmark Channel and always looked forward to the Hallmark Christmas Movies!
After her husband retired from the US Air Force, they both went back to college, and she completed her bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Northeast Missouri State University in Kirksville, MO. She later finished her master’s degree in Elementary Education at Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos, TX. She worked for many years in the Sequin ISD, teaching Kindergarten, 2nd grade, title I, and reading and attended Texas A&M University over three summers where she earned her Reading Specialist Certification.
Loretta is preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Marvin DeLong; sisters, Marion Waldron, and Loydene Nading and husband David; brother-in-law, Robert DeLong and wife Bonny; sister-in-law, Shirley Hickey and husband Larry. Survivors include son, Cary Lee DeLong and wife Tonya, daughter, Pam Platz and husband Jim; grandchildren, Andrew Platz and wife Brandi, Bryan Platz, Meaghan DeLong, Michael DeLong and wife Christina, and McKenna DeLong; great-grandchildren, Annabell Platz and Emelia Platz, Davis DeLong, and James, Callum, and Ryan DeLong; and numerous nieces and nephews, and other loving family members and friends.
The family would like to give special thanks and appreciation to those who cared for Loretta: Dr. Clay Reed and Nurse Holly or Mercy Hospital Oncology and Hematology- Coletta, the nurses, laboratory technicians and staff at Mercy Oncology Infusion- Coletta in Oklahoma City and Dr. Karen Ross of Mercy Clinic Primary Care.
A private family memorial service is being planned for a later date in 2025.
