Born in East Orange, NJ on April 24, 1931, he was a son to the late Elmer W. Sr. and Violet L. (Tucker) Hanlein. Donald enlisted in the United States Air force and proudly served his country as an airmen in the Korean War, earning a Korean Service Medal, a United States Nations Service Medal an Air Crew Membership Badge, a National Defense Service Medal, and a Good Conduct Medal. Following his honorable discharge he returned home to Warren County where he worked several odd jobs until his retirement.
He was a life member of the American Legion Post # 418 Columbia, and enjoyed tinkering with just about anything. He had the ability to turning nothing into something functional and electronic.
Preceding him in death in addition to his parents was his wife Anna Hanlein who passed away on March 11, 2013; and son Brett Hanlein who passed away in 2004; brother Elmer W. Hanlein Jr. who passed in 2013.
Surviving is his daughter, Donna Eick of Easton; sons Bruce Hanlein of Easton, Brian Hanlein of Andover, NJ, Eric Hanlein and his companion Gary Barraco of Stockertown; sister,Violet (Hanlein) Marvin of Stroudsburg; five grandchildren, Michele Maynard and her husband Keith, Mellissa Lewis and her husband Jason, Megan Eick, Courtney Hanlein, and Corann Hanlein five great-grandchildren, Andrew Shelhamer, Kyle Shelhamer, Mylie Maynard, Jayden Lewis, Kason Hall.
Funeral services will be held on Friday February 7, 2014 at 1:00 P.M. at the Lanterman & Allen Funeral Home, Inc. 27 Washington Street, East Stroudsburg with Pastor Gary Barraco officiating. Interment will follow in Prospect Cemetery, Prospect Street, East Stroudsburg.
A public visitation will be held on Friday February 7, 2014 from noon until the time of the service at the funeral home.
