Born in Port Morris, New Jersey, on September 11, 1924, She was a daughter to the late Robert and Magdalana Helen. Barbara was a member of Saint Matthew’s Roman Catholic Church in East Stroudsburg. She was a first generation American. She was a 1942 National Honors graduate of Roxbury High School in Ledgewood, NJ.
Barbara was one of the first women to work for Thomas Edison in the Engineering Dept. During W.W.II. She was also an Engineer at Worthington Pumps, NJ.
Then in 1948 Barbara gained employment with Picatinny Arsenal, NJ as a plastics research technician. This is where she met her husband John Hess, who was a research Chemist. They married in August of 1954 and started a family. They moved to Hamburg, NJ where they raised their four children.
After retirement in 1986, John and Barbara moved to East Stroudsburg, PA to be near their children.
Preceding her in death in addition to her parents was her husband John W. Hess Sr. – a WWII Veteran who died in 1988. After sharing 34 years of marriage together.
Barbara is survived and will be lovingly remembered and missed by her four children: John W. Hess Jr., Paul R. Hess and his wife Corinne, Carol M. Hess, and Dona B. Hatch,; 8 grandchildren: Richard L. Miller II and his wife Agatha, Amanda Miller and her companion Travis D. Newell, Laura Hatch, Joseph Hess, Conrad Hess, Rosemary Hess, Nathaniel Hess, and Paul R. Hess II; 2 great grandchildren: Agatha Leslie Miller, and another one who’s arrival will be sometime in September 2013 . All who brought Barbara great joy and happiness.
Graveside services will be Private to the family at Prospect Cemetery, East Stroudsburg, with Monsignor John A. Bergamo Officiating. of Saint Matthew’s Roman Catholic Church.
