Robert Vaughan McBrayer Jr.

Robert (Bob) Vaughan McBrayer, Jr. was born in Atlanta, Georgia in 1938, the eldest son of Robert Vaughan McBrayer, Sr., and Beatrice Hatchett. The family moved to Chattanooga in 1955. Bob attended Bass High School in Atlanta, Georgia Tech, and studied actuarial science at Georgia State University. He enlisted in the Army and became fluent in German at the Army Language School in Monterey, California. Upon completion, Bob was assigned to Army intelligence in West Germany, decoding intercepted messages from East Germany in the 1960s.

Bob was an avid Scrabble player, enjoyed playing golf, loved old movies, and was a champion bowler scoring a perfect “300” game in a tournament at Brainerd Lanes in Chattanooga. With a twinkle in his eye, he loved telling a good story and making his “Mama’s chocolate candy.” Bob was a prolific blogger on his popular nostalgic web site, TheOldBarberShop.com. He was a loyal Atlanta Braves fan and lifelong “home team” enthusiast going back to the Atlanta Crackers.

Bob loved numbers and spent his career as an insurance actuary. He developed new insurance products for Aflac and other companies. He was also owner of Regency Galleries, an innovative upscale furniture store in Rome, Georgia in the 1970s.

Bob is survived by his son, Robert Vaughan McBrayer, III, his grandson Robert (Robyn) Vaughan McBrayer IV, Bob’s brother William David McBrayer and wife Sandy, nieces Stacy McBrayer Molander, Lauren McBrayer Miller, nephews Ryan Tyler and Justin Tyler, and many great nieces and nephews. He was proceeded in death by his wife, Carol Worthington McBrayer, and his sister Lynda McBrayer Tyler.

Bob was a quick-witted, loving father, brother, and uncle who is deeply missed.

Graveside services will be held at 11 AM Saturday, June 24, 2023 at Lakewood Memory Gardens, East with the Rev. Glenn Hannigan officiating.
