He served and retired from the United States Air Force after 20 years of distinguished service and was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal. He was a veteran of the Vietnam Conflict. He also retired from the United States Postal Service. Ray was a longtime Pittsburgh Steelers fan and enjoyed watching and attending Professional Bull Riders events. He also enjoyed gardening. Ray was a physical fitness enthusiast and was a member of the Air Force Jogging Club where he logged in over 1000 miles. He continued to exercise well into his 80’s.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond Reichard Hum, Sr., and Estella Atkinson Hum.
Left to cherish Ray’s memory are his wife of 53 years, Barbara A. Hum; children Shawna Hum Browne (Bill) of Waynesboro, VA.; Martina Rae Bowersock (Aaron) of Old Hickory, TN.; grandchildren Kailey Ryan Browne, William Tanner Browne, and Grace Lynne Bowersock; great-grandson Owen Noel Suchodolski; and sister Rhea Hum Snyder (David) of Slidell, LA. Also left behind to cherish his memory are many brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews, and his wonderful neighbors.
A Celebration of Ray’s Life will be held in the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home on Thursday September 23, 2021 at 1:00 pm EST. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service beginning at 12:00 pm EST.
He will be laid to rest in the Chattanooga National Cemetery with full military honors provide by the United States Air Force Honor Guard and the American Legion Post 95.
