Leo James Davis, age 98, died on Tuesday, November 1, 2011. The son of the late C. A. and Anna Nelms Davis, he was born in Chattanooga on September 5, 1913. He left Chattanooga to work in Oak Ridge, Tennessee in 1942. He was an elder at New York Avenue Church of Christ for 40 years. He also served on the board of Knoxville Christian School. He returned to Chattanooga in 1983 after retiring from Union Carbide. He was a member of Central Church of Christ in Chattanooga.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 74 years, Jessie Barker Davis.
He is survived by a son, Dr. Jim (Mary) Davis, three daughters: Marie Stephenson of Chattanooga; Mary Catherine Gifford of Chattanooga, and Joan Stuckey of Tunkhannock, Pennsylvania. He leaves eight grandchildren: Angie (Pat) Conroy, Lookout Mountian; Libby (Dr.Jim) Gildner, Springfield, Illinois; Jenny (Tom) Wamsley, Atlanta, Georgia; Barker (Kelly) Davis, Philidelphia, Pennsylvania; Chad (Petra) Stuckey, Allentown, Pennsylvania; Springer Stuckey, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; Vic Stephenson, Ladera Ranch, California; and Lesa (Roger) Witt of Chattanooga. He leaves twenty great grandchildren. He is also survived by a nephew, Muecke (Cathy) Barker, and nieces Wanda (Jim) Gentry, Mary Keith (Maurice) Bowen, Lynn Robertson, and Cindy (Jim) Morgan, all of the Chattanooga area.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 7 at Central Church of Christ, 400 Vine St., Chattanooga with Minister David Schonhoff officiating. A private burial service will follow at Greenwood Cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Sunday November 6 from 3-6 p.m. at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Mission Fund at Central Church of Christ.
