She was born on September 24, 1932, in Chattanooga to Oscar Freeman Howard and Beulah Goins Howard. Joyce was a Chattanooga girl; she graduated from Central High School as a 3 year honor student, a member of the National Honor Society and Valedictorian of her class.
Joyce accompanied her parents on her father’s assignment in Europe and she had one year of schooling near Frankfurt, Germany. She entered Baroness Erlanger School of Nursing in 1950. In her Junior year, she was elected Secretary of her class, and Chairman-elect of the Tennessee Association of Student Nurses, and in her Senior year was Chairman/President of the TASN. Joyce also attended the Biennial Nurses Convention in Atlantic City, NJ, and was one of the representatives of the Annual TSNA and TASN Convention in Memphis.
Joyce married Hulett Siniard on November 1, 1952 and soon found herself in Germany again while Hugh served his tour in the United States Air Force. Their first child, Debra was born during their time there.
Joyce was a favorite Girl Scout leader in the ‘60s. She also was known as the mom who always had popsicles in her freezer.
Besides her nursing degree, Joyce was also a licensed Realtor at Central Real Estate and worked alongside Hugh and their children for many years. She was a member of The Chattanooga Board of Realtors and had a GRI designation. Joyce was also a member of Pilot International, Women's Missionary Union, and Brainerd Kiwanis Women's Auxiliary. Hugh and Joyce were also involved in Gideon’s International for many years.
Joyce was always active in her church, most recently at Ridgedale Baptist Church, and professed her belief in the Lord. Just knowing her was a testament to her faith.
She was an avid reader and she loved cross stitching, birdwatching and sharing her memories of her times in Germany.
She was loved by all that knew her.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 62 years, Hulett B. “Hugh” Siniard; and daughter, Brenda G. Siniard.
Joyce is survived by her daughter, Debra Siniard Stinnett, (Andrew), Chattanooga, TN; her son, Mark A. Siniard, (Elaine) Chattanooga; her granddaughters, Wesley Siniard Sheley, (Matt), Knoxville, TN, Caroline Joyce Siniard, Austin, TX; her grandsons, Andrew Stinnett, Chattanooga, TN, and Zachary Stinnett, Chattanooga, TN; and two great grandchildren, River Hulett Downs, and Zoey Abigail Stinnett, also of Chattanooga, TN; several nieces and nephews, including, Jeannie Blevins and Dave Lingerfelt. They loved their A.J. (Aunt Joyce) and they have been very loving and attentive to her.
Joy also had 3 step-grandchildren; Matthew Vandegriff, (Erica), Gainesville, GA. Lee Smith, Chattanooga, TN., and Blaine Vandegriff, (Shelby), Fort Oglethorpe, GA.
11 step-great grandchildren that she always said that she loved like her own. Jackson, Olivia, and Reece Vandegriff, Gainesville, GA. Taylor Boehm, Anna and Lila Smith, Chattanooga, TN. Brock, Roman and Emory Vandegriff, Fort Oglethorpe, GA. Forrest and Willow Downs, Chattanooga, TN.
A private family visitation and funeral service will be held on Tuesday in the East Chapel with Dr. Doug Plumlee officiating. Interment will be in the Chattanooga National Cemetery.
