Sandra Elizabeth Stone

Sandra Elizabeth Stone, 82, was born on August 11, 1942, in Brockton, Massachusetts, the only daughter of Charles Ernest Tisdale and Thyra Vivian (Richardson) Tisdale. She died peacefully at home on September 23, 2024, surrounded by her family. Sandra was married February 24, 1962, to the late Howard Anderson Stone for 46 years before he passed in 2008. She grew up in Salem, New Hampshire and graduated from Woodbury High School. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of New Hampshire in 1966 and her Master of Arts degree from Michigan State University in 1972. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother who always put her family first. She will be in our hearts forever.

Sandy’s career began as a 1st grade teacher in Eaton Rapids, Michigan before she joined Haslett Public Schools as a 3rd grade teacher. She taught 6th grade science at Haslett Middle School for 38 years. In addition to teaching, she coached the 7th grade girls’ basketball team for 35 years, the Science Olympiad team, the Equestrian team, and she was a 4-H leader. Many of her students have fond memories of their quail science projects and leaf and bug collection projects.

Sandy enjoyed gardening, woodworking and making dulcimers. For many years she sold fruits and vegetables, fresh eggs and Thanksgiving turkeys at the Meridian Township Farmer’s Market alongside her late husband. She traveled all over the world including Belize, to study the ecology of the rain forest, and with the People-to-People International Program to Australia, China, Great Britian and many European countries. Being a New England native, she loved getting fresh Maine lobsters, steamers and shrimp. Every summer she spent a lot of time with her cousins at her aunt and uncle’s camp at Old Country Pond in New Hampshire. She loved collecting seashells, paperweights and lighthouses. She loved shopping and going to garage sales too! In her free time, she enjoyed spending time at the cottage on Crystal Lake and her cat named Kitty.

Sandy was very driven and strict but encouraging at the same time. As a teacher she always wanted to set a good example for her students. Throughout her career she was recognized and awarded not only for being an outstanding teacher, but because of her signature hair style. Family meant the world to her, especially her daughters and their families. She enjoyed spending the holidays and vacations with her family.

Sandy is survived by her three children, Linda (Karl Jr.) Lovett of San Ramon, CA, Lori (Michael) Oberg of Delta, PA, and Kathy (John) Dzieciolowski of Draper, UT; eleven grandchildren - Corey Monroe, Trisha Monroe, Ashley Monroe, Blake Monroe, Brittanie (Lovett) Reid, Audrey Lovett, Karl Lovett III, Anderson Lovett, John Dzieciolowski Jr, Charles Dzieciolowski, Michael Dzieciolowski; five great grandchildren - Brooklyn Pittman, Cardyn VonNieda, Caleb VonNieda, Addilyn Reid, and Joy Reid; and partner Richard Treamer.

Sandy was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Howard. Memorial services will be held Sunday, September 29, 2024, at 9:30am at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, 1730 E. Grand River, East Lansing. The family will receive friends prior to the memorial services from 9am to 1pm. Cremation will take place and graveside services will be held at a later date at Pine Grove Cemetery in Salem, New Hampshire.

In lieu of flowers, donations will be accepted, and a donation will be made to the Haslett Public School Foundation on behalf of Sandra Stone.
