She retired as an administrative assistant in the Provost Office at MSU in 1997. She was active in the lives of her family and the community serving as a Girl Scout leader for many years, volunteering with the Great Lakes Folk Festival, and a long time member of Faith Church. She was an avid Spartan fan and a member of the University Club. She and her husband enjoyed traveling extensively throughout the US and Europe. The highlight of her travels was taking her entire family on a Caribbean cruise. Winters were spent in Ramona, CA, summers at Wiggins Lake in Gladwin, MI. Joanne had many interests including music, books, and enjoyed attending shows at the Wharton Center. She was a lover of nature, especially birds. She took pleasure in baking and was known for her pies. Joanne was encouraging, supportive and generous with everyone she knew. The joy of her life was her loving family.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brother J. Frank (Frankie) McLennan.
She is survived by her husband of 41 years, Alain, children Karen Heckaman, Catherine Heckaman, John (Carol) Heckaman; step-daughters Christine Corcos and Isabel Corcos (Brian Stockhoff); grandchildren Joel Heckaman, Katelyn (Tom) Ailles, Molly McGinnis, Casey Heckaman, Cullen Stockhoff, Corey Heckaman, Avery Stockhoff; great-grandchildren Zoe Heckaman, and one on the way. She is also survived by her beloved cat, Ember.
Her soft loving spirit and beautiful smile will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
A Memorial service is to be held at a later date.
