She was born to Clyde and Helen Mullen in Shelbyville, Indiana on September 26, 1937.
Caryl took great pride in the five children she helped raise. She worked 20 years as an administrative assistant for Michigan Recreation and Parks Association, enjoyed volunteering at Meridian Christian Church, was a great cook and a loyal Spartan, Wolfpack, Chiefs, Vikings, Detroit, and Hope College sports fan.
Her most notable pastime, however, was the passionate commitment she showed to her 14 grandchildren. Attending sporting events, hosting sleepovers, and babysitting countless times allowed her to build an unconditional, loving relationship where each of them felt as if they were ‘Nana’s favorite’! If a grandchild had an event, Nana was there. She always had gum in her purse, encouragement to offer after a tough loss and a proud victory hug to give if the right team won! It was comforting to know that their #1 fan would be there, quietly and humbly offering her loyal support.
Her life was a living example of Philipians 2:3-4 “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.”
Caryl is survived by her children Ron (Debby) Mitchell, Kathy (Andy) Sheufelt, Jayne Carnago, Beth (Mike) Homan, Greg (Dina) Mitchell, 14 grandchildren Jordan (Rachelle), Maria (Mike), Michelle (Joe), Ryan, Amy (Adam), Gina (Ben), Jerry (Erica), Aleah, Anna, Quincie (Daniel), Jalynn (Nick), Bryson, Hannah, and Emily along with 7 great- grandchildren Mia, Kenzie, Maddie, Reese, Callahan, Giuliana, and Grace. Additional survivors include former husband Ron Mitchell, siblings Bob Mullen, Liz (Larry) Downey, Cindy Harrison, Steve (Jan) Mullen, brother-in-law John (Deborah) Franklin, numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will celebrate Caryl’s life at a private gathering in June. As per her wishes, Caryl donated her body to MSU’s Willed Body Program. In lieu of flowers, her family asks that you consider donating to the Dobie Road Medical Care Facility or Hope College Men’s Basketball Program in her honor. The family is being served by the Gorsline Runciman Funeral Home in East Lansing.
