Susan “Sue” Durrenberger, 82, of Coventry, CT, died peacefully on November 17, 2022. Born in Hartford on June 17, 1940, a daughter of the late Joseph J. and Helen (Mclaughlin) Losty of East Hartford, CT. A graduate of Hartford Public High School she went on to receive a Bachelor’s Degree at the University of Connecticut, for which she was very proud. Sue’s entrance into the world of single parenthood, saw her working full time, raising two sons, a beloved horse Cremo, and many dogs and critters along the way. Her career found her working at Glastonbury Bank and Trust, Crum & Forster Insurance, Invisible Fence, and Coventry Public Schools as a paraprofessional teacher. It was Sue’s last two jobs that invigorated her true passion; helping those who are underserved, or underrepresented. She would take a stand, where others were afraid.
Sue worked countless hours helping children, and rescuing dogs and horses, by herself, and with her network of like-minded friends, and through her generous contributions to organizations affiliated to these causes. She saw valuable lives, where others may not. Another of her predilections was the plight of the American Indian. She knew by heart, all of the broken Indian treaties. Sue visited Arizona multiple times, and always included visits to Indian Reservations. She spent a lifetime donating to the Crazy Horse Memorial mountain carving in the Black Hills of South Dakota, which she visited on her 74th birthday. She was a compassionate and courageous advocate for her family and the forgotten.
Sue leaves her two sons, Daniel Durrenberger and his wife Lisa of East Hartford, CT and David Durrenberger and his fiancé Elaine Carpino of Lovell, ME; her brother John Losty and his wife Marion of Hernando, FL as well as, several nieces, nephews, former co-workers and dear friends. Besides her parents, Sue was predeceased by a brother, James Losty of East Hartford, CT; a sister, Joanne Terry and her husband Frank of Coventry, CT and her former spouse and father of her children, Edward Durrenberger of East Hartford, CT.
Friends are invited to a visitation on Monday (November 21) from 9:30 am to 10:30 am at D'Esopo East Hartford Memorial Chapel, 30 Carter Street, East Hartford, followed by an 11:00 am Mass of Christian Burial at St. Christopher Church, 538 Brewer St, East Hartford. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery, 162 Roberts Street, East Hartford.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Sue’s name may be made to the Connecticut Humane Society, 701 Russell Road, Newington, CT 06111.
