Rose Marie (DeBella) Barone, 88, of East Hartford, loving wife of over 64 years of Richard A. Barone, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, January 17, 2023 with her beloved husband by her side. Born in Hartford on April 27, 1934, the only child of the late Frank and Antoinette (DeLassio) DeBella, she had been a resident of East Hartford for most of her life. Rose was a graduate of Mount Saint Joseph Academy in West Hartford, class of 1952 and earned her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Connecticut in 1956 as a member of the first graduating class of physical therapy. While at UConn she became a member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority. Prior to her retirement in 1996, she was a licensed Physical Therapist for 30 years in the East Hartford/Manchester area.
Rose was an avid UConn basketball fan who enjoyed traveling around the country for games, championships and numerous Final Four tournaments. In 1984, she and her husband purchased their beach home in Charlestown, RI where she loved spending her summers and special days. She received her greatest joy when her children, grandchildren, friends, or anyone came to visit her at the beach.
A devout catholic, she was a faithful communicant of St. Christopher Church in East Hartford and St. James Church in Charlestown, RI where she taught summer bible camp. She liked to play tennis at Glenbrooke Swim Club in East Hartford, the Manchester Racquet Club, East Hartford Racquet Club, and Ninigret Park in Rhode Island. Rose was talented in so many areas from making clothes and curtains, to bargain shopping, crossword puzzles, and of course cooking. She also enjoyed going to the Hartford Stage and the Theater by the Sea in Matunuck, RI, and being a former member of the Saturday morning Market Ladies; Book Clubs, East Hartford Women’s Club; cards and Bridge Night.
In addition to her beloved husband, Rose is survived by her four devoted children, Judith A. Shok and her husband Marc of Salem, VA, Matthew F. Barone and his wife Sharon of Wethersfield, Andrea B. Hutton and her husband Timothy of Madison, Ann-Marie Stevenson and her husband Craig of East Hartford; nine cherished grandchildren, Richard Shok and his wife Allison, Emily Shok and her fiancé Conor Lunny, Alyssa DeLuca and her husband Rico, Nicholas Barone, Daniel Hutton, Chelsea Hutton, Megan Fan and her husband Tommy, Sarah Stevenson, Eliza Stevenson; five adored great-grandchildren, Theodore and Spencer Shok, Vivian and Cameron DeLuca, Sadie Fan; several nieces, nephews, and dear friends. Besides her parents, Rose was predeceased by a grandson whom she shared a special bond with, Alexander Shok.
Funeral service will be Tuesday (January 24, 2023) at 9:30 am from the D’Esopo East Hartford Memorial Chapel, 30 Carter Street, East Hartford with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 10:30 am at St. Christopher Church of St. Edmund Campion Parish, 538 Brewer Street, East Hartford. Burial will follow at Mount Saint Benedict Cemetery, (Section A-Extension), Bloomfield. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home chapel on Monday (January 23, 2023) from 4 – 7 pm.
