“He who harbors no ill-will against anyone, who is compassionate and friendly, who is free of ego and conceit, who accepts pain and pleasure with even mind, who is always content, who has self-control, who is unshaken in resolve, and who has surrendered herself to God, is dear to God.” -Bhagavad-Gita
Joyce passed from this life peacefully in her home on Tuesday August 23, 2011 after an extended battle with melanoma. She now joins her beloved husband of 34 years, William G. King Jr., who preceded her in death in June 2010. She was born April 24, 1931 in Redwood County, MN to Clifford John Hultquist and Erma Brockman Hultquist. She attended Colorado University School of Nursing and worked in various hospitals throughout the country, including 27 ½ years with the state of CT, while residing in Middletown, Glastonbury, and East Hartford. She also received an Associate in Science degree from Charter Oak State College in CT. With her husband, Bill, she spent many summers RVing around the states, including trips to visit her son in Bellingham, WA. Her explorative spirit also took her on an RV adventure to Alaska and a journey to India. Joyce had a deep connection to nature, from the stars and planets in the universe, to the birds and squirrels in her own backyard. She had a passion for gardening, filling her yard with flowers. She enjoyed long walks, stopping to chat with neighbors along the way. An avid UConn Basketball fan, she cut long distance calls short if a game was on. Joyce was younger than her years, devoted to her loved ones, and brimming with insightful wisdom.
She was preceded in death by daughter Jennifer Bumstead (d.1974), brother Jack Hultquist, and family friend Lila Radcliffe. Those who will miss her greatly include her son Dean Bumstead, wife Kris Carlson, and grandson Devon Bumstead (Bellingham, WA); sister Joan and husband Ray Mullen (Cambridge, MN); sister Darline and late husband Robert Dirks (Crookston, MN); brother Dale Hultquist and wife LaDonna (Mankato, MN); sister Glenda and husband Terry Dill (Torrington, CT); brother Craig Hultquist (Belview, MN); sister-in-law Wildie-Mae Hultquist (Belview, MN); numerous nieces and nephews; Aisling Morgaine (CT), and special friend Candace Pratt (Williston, VT).
The family will hold a private memorial at a later date. In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution may be made to a charity of your choice.
