John A. “Buster” Driscoll, 93, of East Hartford, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 8, 2011. He was the beloved husband of the late Shirley M. (McClenning) Driscoll, his wife of 69 years. He was born in Berlin, NH on November 18, 1917, the son of the late William A. and Almeda (Dustin) Driscoll.
John was the last survivor of a family of eight children. He graduated from Plymouth High School in 1936 with many accolades in football, basketball and baseball. He was one of six experienced skiers teaching advanced new techniques in skiing in Plymouth NH, opening a ski school on Christmas day in 1940. John was an expert skier when living in New Hampshire and frequently skied the challenging Tuckerman's Ravine on MT. Washington N.H. John moved from NH to CT in 1944, where he and partners opened a meat and produce market called Little-Big Market in Hartford. He also worked at Stop & Shop as a meat cutter before becoming a machinist for American Cam Co. retiring in 1985. John was a coach for the East Hartford Midget Football League for several years. He also started the amateur skiing class in Wickham Park, which was sponsored by the Hartford Times, and taught there for several years.
John is survived by his daughter, Marti Choquette and her husband John of Glastonbury; his sons, Richard Driscoll and his wife Carol of Simsbury, John Driscoll Jr. and his wife Denise of East Hartford; six grandchildren, Jeffrey Romayko and his wife Wendy, Kelly Mervine and her husband Alan, Kurt Driscoll, Shelby Malinowski and her husband Chris, Mark Raymond and his wife Mary, Michele DiBacco and 14 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his daughter, Carole Romayko and her husband Brian.
