The child of immigrants, Herman was born and raised in tenements in the South Bronx. He received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Industrial Arts Education from NYU. Herman invented the tape splicer for repairing and editing reel-to-reel recording tape in 1954 and began manufacturing them in his basement. He went on to invent, manufacture and distribute a broad range of audio electronic products at Flushing, NY-based Robins Industries Corporation, the company he founded, took public and led for more than 25 years. His products were widely sold under the Robins label as well as Radio Shack, Lafayette Radio Electronics and other major brands.
Herman also served as a founding president of the non-profit Advanced Center for Psychotherapy in Jamaica, NY, which recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. Remembering his own experience at a charity summer camp, he became a strong supporter and joined the board of a similar camp outside New York City. His creativity also extended to sculpture and stained glass. He leaves a legacy of beauty for his family to enjoy.
Herman considered his children and grandchildren his greatest achievement. He referred to himself as “the cheerleader,” encouraging and celebrating his family’s achievements large and small. He was deeply committed to education and believed life was enriched and success attained through knowledge.
The family would like to thank his caretaker Kofi Dwemoh, the gang at the Putnam Plaza Dunkin Donuts, the residents of the Meadow Hill community, Vitas Hospice and Companions & Homemakers for making the last year of his life enjoyable and comfortable.
A service celebrating Herman’s life will take place on Saturday, October 26 at Glastonbury Funeral Home, 450 New London Turnpike, Glastonbury. The family will greet guests at 1 pm and a ceremony celebrating Herman’s life will begin at 1:30.
