Dennis Martin Hickey, 74 of Manchester CT, formerly of East Hartford CT, passed away unexpectedly at home on July 7 , 2024. He was born June 9 1950 in Hartford CT. Dennis was raised in East Hartford CT. In his youth, he excelled in sports, academics, and mischief. He was an alter boy at St. Mary's Church, and was known to fish, hunt and trap on the Hockanum River. Dennis was a graduate of East Hartford High School class of 1968. As a young man, he worked two jobs while putting himself through college, all while raising a young family. He graduated from Central Connecticut State University and University of Hartford in business and accounting. He was employed by Coca Cola for many years and was a member and President of the East Hartford Chamber of Commerce. He also worked at Jason Soda and as an independent courier. Dennis was involved with many charitable golf tournaments and organizations, including The Salvation Army, St. Judes, Wounded Warrior Project, and a member of the VFW as well as Chaplain of The American Legion. He was also a big Uconn supporter in all sports.
Dennis enjoyed the camaraderie of being with his many cherished friends at IAH, the Pub, Shea's, Toons, the Legion and VFW., along with his WSB and Old Lyme family. He was always up for fun, whether on the slopes, at the beach, tailgating, or his yearly family trips to Aruba.
Dennis was a great friend to all who knew him. He was a kind, thoughtful and generous man who always greeted you with a big smile and open arms for a hug. He will be missed!
He is survived by his children, Bridget Rothe (Rich) of Coventry CT, and Christopher Hickey of FL, and his beloved grandchildren, Casey and Madysen Rothe and Charlie Hickey and Ryan Cottongim. In addition, he will be greatly missed by his brothers, Daniel (Leisa) Hickey of Ellington CT and SC, and Val Hickey (Jami) of Eastford, CT. He will also be sadly missed by his many loving nieces and nephews, Matt Hickey (Evelyn), Justin Hickey (Jessica), and Katie and Jackson Hickey, and Joshua Hickey. Jason Grivois (Jen), and Kayleigh, Alyssa, Izzy, and Miley Grivois. Shane (Jenn) and Vivienne Hickey. In addition, he leaves his former wife Donna Hickey. He was predeceased by his beloved parents Richard Hickey and Irene Dalton Hickey, and his sister, Mary Beth Hickey Grivois.
A Celebration of Dennis' life will be held on Saturday, July 20, 2024 from 1-4pm at Benjamin J. Callahan/Newkirk & Whitney Funeral Home 318 Burnside Ave., East Hartford, CT 06108. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family. Donations in Dennis' memory may be made to the American Legion Post 14, 114 West St., Vernon, CT 06066.
