Nelson P. Torre, MD, of Williamsville, NY, passed away on April 22, 2023, at age 88. Loving and devoted husband of 65 years to Joyce (nee Barrett) Torre; father of Christine Torre, Nelson S. (Eileen) Torre, Pamela (Jeffrey Rosen) Torre and Douglas (Karen) Torre; grandfather of Dr. Barrett Torre, MD, Salvatore Torre, Connor Mick, Ryan Mick, Anna Rosen, Jacob Rosen, Alex Rosen, John Torre, Max Torre, Nelson A. Torre and William Torre; cherished son of the late Salvatore and Maria Torre; brother to the late Sylvia (late Bernard “Ben” Giordano); uncle of Bernard, Carmen and Christopher Giordano; stepson of the late Luisa Torre. Dr. Torre cared for innumerable patients during his years of private practice in internal medicine and rheumatology in Buffalo. He was affiliated with Sisters of Charity Hospital where he served as medical staff president, 1987; he was Chief of Medicine and director of the internal medicine residency program, 1989-98. He was the founding Medical Director, Daemen College Physician Assistant program,1994-2007, and served as a commissioner of the ARC-PA, 1999- 2004. Dr. Torre was an emeritus clinical professor at SUNY at Buffalo, Jacobs School of Medicine, Department of Medicine; a clinical professor of medicine, 1986-2007 and on clinical faculty from 1968 to 2007. He worked at the National Institutes of Health, 1992-93. He served as a captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, 1966-68. He was a fellow, American College of Physicians, and a founding fellow, American College of Rheumatology. He attended SUNY Upstate Medical School in Syracuse, graduating MD cum laude, 1961; University of Buffalo, BS (pharmacy) cum laude, 1956. He attended St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute, 1948-52; and completed his primary education at PS #37, 1948. Nelson was a lifelong learner; in his retirement years, he delighted in reading history, literature and the works of Joseph Campbell. He believed in the utmost value of education and provided for the college educations of his wife, children and grandchildren. Dr. Torre established scholarship endowments at the UB School of Pharmacy; at Daemen College, and at St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute. He loved to spend time with his family, play golf and bridge. He was a longtime member of the Park Country Club, Williamsville, NY, and a member of the Plantation Golf and Country Club in Venice, FL. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial service at PERNA, DENGLER, ROBERTS FUNERAL HOME, 1671 Maple Rd., Williamsville, NY 14221 on Saturday (May 13, 2023) at 11am.
