Jean was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, friend, and aunt, she passed away at the St. Peter’s Hospital, in Hamilton, Ontario, in her 86th year.
She was deeply loved and supported by her husband, Barry, for 64 years, her children Valerie Thompson Winger (Jeff) and Mark Thompson, and grandchildren Wendy, Sarah and Jamie Gallagher; Nadine and Sabrina Winger; and Hannah and Jack Thompson.
Jean will be dearly missed by her extended family, including her sister, Doreen Golightly; her nieces and nephews; as well as many friends.
Jean made a point of staying connected with everyone in her life. She would have lengthy daily phone calls, whether sitting in the basement or enjoying her beautiful backyard, to catch up on the lives of those she cared about. She always made people feel welcome in her home, ensuring they were well-fed and never without a drink in hand. She and her husband Barry had many friends, whom they often entertained in their warm and inviting home.
Jean cared deeply for everyone and treated them all with kindness and fairness, qualities that endeared her to those around her. She was a strong, determined, and compassionate woman who left an indelible mark on everyone she met.
Jean served as the head administrative secretary for Continuing Education at the Hamilton Board of Education, retiring in 1998. Her greatest joy, however, was the time she spent as a devoted mother, grandmother, and the love of her husband Barry’s life.
The love that Barry and Jean shared was, and remains, irreplaceable. Their relationship was an inspiration to everyone who knew them. They were a beautiful couple, wonderful parents, and loving grandparents who cherished 64 incredible years together.
In her free time, Jean was an accomplished quilter and seamstress. Her passion for this hobby was evident to anyone who stepped into her sewing room, filled with her beautiful creations. Jean was a superb swimmer since childhood, and one her most favourite past times was reading books.
Jean remained resilient until her passing and maintained a positive spirit throughout her illness.
The celebration of her life will be held at the Marlatt Funeral Home (reception house next to the funeral home), 195 King Street West, Dundas, ON, on Saturday, December 7th from 2-4pm. Memories will be shared at 3pm.
Donations in her memory may be made to charity of your choice or to the Cancer Assistance Program.
