Patrick was born in Walkerville, Ontario, in 1931, and he and his family lived through the dirty thirties. Patrick decided early on that he wanted to go to Assumption College High school, where he would receive his education from the Basilian fathers who enormously impacted his life. They also had a great hockey team, which led to an eventual scholarship to the University of Michigan.
Patrick obtained his Geology degree and, after graduation, took a year off to go to England to play professional hockey. Here, he met the love of his life, Sheila. They married and had three children, of whom he was incredibly proud. After many successful years in the oil and gas industry, Patrick retired, and he and Sheila moved to Vancouver Island, where they lived happily for over 25 years.
Patrick is survived by his wife, Sheila, his children, Lesley, Patrick, Tim (Linda) Cooney, and his grandchildren, Melissa (Chris) Watamanuk, Sean Cooney, Alex (Les) Hansen, Carleen Bedomme, and Sami Cooney, as well as his Great-Grandchildren, Lucas and Emily Watamanuk. Patrick was predeceased by his mother and father, Patrick and Marine Cooney, his siblings, Jack (Marjorie) and Rose (Bruce). He is survived by Rose’s husband, Dorval, and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews from his hometown in Ontario.
The funeral will be held on April 5, 2023, at 2:00 at St. Joseph’s Church in Chemainus, BC.
