Dorothy was born in Duluth on October 25, 1920 to Allyn and Edna (Ballou) Skelton. She grew up in the Lester Park area and attended and graduated from Central High School. Later she moved to Louisville, Kentucky where she met her future husband Jacob Schmidt. They returned to Duluth and were married at Trinity Cathedral Church on July 13, 1943. They returned to Louisville for a short time before Jacob went overseas to serve his country during WWII. Dorothy moved back to Duluth with her first daughter Betty Jane where Jacob later joined them after the war.
Dorothy loved classical music as well as singing and painting. Dorothy had a fascination with Lake Superior and it played an integral part in in her life. She was a past member of St. Edward’s Episcopal Church and spent many years singing in the choir and doing volunteer work. Dorothy will be remembered for her compassionate nature, terrific sense of humor and her willingness to listen. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
She is preceded in death by her husband; daughter, Sally; her parents; brothers, John and Allyn and sister Betty.
Dorothy is survived by her son Jacob M. Jr. (Sarah) of Tower, MN, daughters, Betty Jane (John) Fetvedt of Raleigh, N.C., Peggy (Howie) Tune of Reno, NV., Susan (David) Birks of New Egypt, NJ., 11 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren as well as many other family members and friends.
Memorial service will be held at 11 A.M. on Friday, March 25, 2011 at the Benedictine Health Care Chapel 935 Kenwood Ave. with Rev. Bill Van Oss presiding. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Benedictine Health Center.
