George Winger McCloy, age 80, of Dublin died January 9, 2024, at Riverside Methodist Hospital. George loved his children, daughter-in-law Holly, and grandchildren dearly and cared deeply about their well-being. To his family, he was the rock and the strength of the family. George really cared about the people he recruited into his Agency and enjoyed mentoring them. Many turned out to be very successful under his guidance and care. He cared deeply for clients. Each one was personal to him. George was kind, generous, smart, loyal, fun and handsome. He was the fun machine at parties where he would often say he was “strong like bull” and other colorful jokes! He worked hard, played hard, and loved hard. He lived life to its fullest. Many considered him the most generous man ever known. Born in Cleveland, OH to the late Walter and Julia McCloy. Graduated with a B.S. at The Ohio State University. He founded McCloy Financial Services and earned the Charter Life Underwriter and Charter Financial Consultant Designations. He managed the firm from 1969 – 1999 building one of the largest agencies in the State of Ohio. He was a Master Agency Builder, a Life & Qualified Member of Million Dollar Round Table, and the Top of the Table. Professionally, he was a member of the Association of Advanced Life Underwriters, the American Society of Charter Life Underwriters, National Association of Life Underwriters, Columbus Life Underwriters, and Columbus General Agents & Managers Association. He was inducted into the Junior Achievement Central Ohio Business Hall of Fame and the New England Financial Hall of Fame. He was also a member of Young Presidents Organization, World Presidents Organization, CEO, past Treasurer of Community Capital Development Corporation Board Member, James Cancer Center Foundation Board Member, Ohio Health Hospital Foundation Board, Member of Muirfield Village Golf Club, Columbus Club, Ocean Reef Club, and Fort Lauderdale Country Club. George spent leisure time traveling with his Yacht, Reel Dividends, and captain Billy, to many exotic islands with family and great friends.
Survived by his wife Diane; children, George Jr.(Holly) and Julie Mercker; grandchildren Gabrielle, Mackenzie, George III McCloy, and Madison (Amber), Sophia and Ava Mercker; brothers Stanley and Walter (Debbie) McCloy; and Bobbi Billiter, his longtime assistant who was devoted to him. Celebration of George’s life will occur at 2pm Monday, January 15, at Schoedinger Dublin, 5980 Perimeter Drive where the celebration will continue following the service from 3-5pm.
