Richard B. Sisk Jr. peacefully passed away August 2nd, 2022 at his home in Long Beach, CA after a three year fight with cancer. He is resting in the arms of God having accepted Christ as his Savior as a teenager.
Richard was born June 21st, 1941 in Bessemer City, NC. He is the son of the late Alma Lackey Sisk and Richard B. “Burl” Sisk, Sr. As a young boy he loved playing in the woods or searching in plowed fields for arrowheads and Indian relics. In high school he contributed his athletic abilities to the football and basketball teams. His love for basketball continued throughout his life. He played in many city leagues in the Long Beach CA area. He loved shooting hoops with his two sons at home in the driveway. He made many lifelong friends playing basketball in the different city leagues.
After high school Richard joined the United States Navy. He served his Country for four years aboard the USS Talladega as a machinist rising to the rank of third class. He returned to Bessemer City in 1964 with his new bride and started a 49 year career in the printing industry. He worked for Wallace Press in Bessemer City for two years learning to operate a collator before moving to California. In Long Beach he was hired by Cal-Snap and Tab Corporation later known as Wright Business Graphics. In 1978 Richard was awarded the Master Printers of America Certificate of Craftsmanship for his outstanding ability, performance, experience and skill as a Business Forms Collator Operator. He trained many of the new hires as collator operators. He was known as a friend and confidant to the other employees. They knew they could trust him to be an encouragement with whatever was going on in their lives. He retired in 2013 after working for the company for 47 years.
Richard was extremely active in his community. He headed up a monthly community cleanup for over 15 years. His activity in the community earned him numerous recognitions and awards, including the Long Beach Police Department’s, Chief’s Gold Shield Award. He looked out for everyone in the neighborhood where he lived for 53 years. Richard was always willing to help anyone with anything they needed at anytime.
Richard was a master gardener and planted and took care of over 20 fruit trees in his backyard sharing the annual harvest with his friends, family and neighbors. For years he had a summer garden as well as a winter garden.
His sons affectionately called him “Clubber” after an incident when he found some guys tearing up the garden and he went after the hoodlums with a firewood log.
He enjoyed the outdoors, and would often go on long hikes. He loved hiking and spent many hours at Monrovia Canyon Park. When he visited home in North Carolina you would find him hiking on Crowder’s Mountain or hiking from Kings Mountain State Park in South Carolina to Crowder’s Mountain State Park in North Carolina.
Richard is survived by his wife of 58 years, Calvena (Cree) Sisk. He was preceded in death by his son Jim, two years ago at the age of 54. Richard is survived by his daughter-in-law Kelly, his son Ron and his wife Christy. Grandchildren Maxwell and his wife Angela, granddaughters Maggie Eli, Marie Sisk, Caitlyn Sisk, Mikayla Sisk, and Brooklyn Sisk, great grandchildren, Hezekiah Fisher, Natalie Fisher, Devani Coleman and Genevieve Sisk. Sisters, Diane Pruitt and husband Danny, Joan Arruza and husband Jim. His nephews, Gregory Arruza, Micah Cree, Aaron Cree, Nicholas Cree, Eric Cree and Jeremy Cree. His nieces, Dani Cree, Tori Cree, Cinnamon Mancini, Jennifer Kahler and Alexandria Cree, 4 great nephews and 8 great nieces along with numerous friends and neighbors.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 3rd at 2:30 PM at ECCU 955 W. Imperial Highway, Brea CA. 92821 with a time of fellowship immediately following.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests a gift in Richard’s memory be made to the CCCH School Building fund at Calvary Chapel Chino Hills 4201 Eucalyptus Ave, Chino, CA 91710 (909) 393-7100.
