He was born in Cambridge, Minnesota the son of the late Mr. Kennith Southerland and Mrs. Eunice Grafstrom Southerland.
Gary, a dedicated and hardworking individual who touched the lives of many during his time with us. Gary devoted 32 years of his life to the California State Patrol, serving with integrity and commitment. His career also included a role as a guard at San Quentin Prison, where he worked diligently to maintain order and security. Additionally, Gary proudly served in the United States Air Force for eight years, honoring his country with his service.
Outside of his professional life, Gary was a man of many passions. He found peace and joy in outdoor pursuits, especially fishing, and spent countless hours on deep-sea fishing trips. He also had a creative side, enjoying painting, woodworking, and building birdhouses. His love for nature extended to gardening, where he could often be found planting and cultivating in his yard.
Gary was a devout member of the Lutheran faith, where his values of kindness, service, and devotion were evident in all that he did. He will be remembered for his strong character, work ethic, and the love he shared with his family and friends. Gary’s legacy will live on through the many lives he touched, and his memory will be cherished forever.
In addition to his parents, Gary is preceded in death by his son Billy William Southerland
Left to cherish his memory, Gary leaves behind his loving wife of 54 years, Debbie Millsaps Southerland, daughters, Lisa Southerland, and Robyn Maher; half-sisters, Sandra Carson and Nancy Carson and his grandchildren, Danelle and Nate Martin and Bryce Martin.
Memorial Services will be scheduled in the spring of 2025.
