Elizabeth Ann Stephenson Long, age 63, of Douglasville, Georgia passed away Saturday, August 10, 2024. Elizabeth was born October 2, 1960 at Anniston Memorial Hospital in Anniston, Alabama. She grew up in Oxford, Alabama and was a 1978 graduate of Oxford High School where she was a member of the marching band and a majorette. Elizabeth was also active in the high school theater. She attended Oglethorpe University and the University of San Diego where she received her paralegal certificate. Her legal administration career spanned over 30 years, working both in Atlanta and in San Diego, California. She loved her family, but let it be said “Elizabeth loved the beach, and Bobby loved Elizabeth.” She loved traveling to beaches, especially to Sanibel Island. She enjoyed painting and pottery as hobbies and was a member of the Douglas County Art Guild.
Elizabeth actively supported the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America. By participating in seven Team Challenge and Team Cycle events, Elizabeth raised over $30,000 for the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA). In 2010, she volunteered along with approximately 120 people and traveled to Washington DC to meet with local members of the House and Senate during World IBD Day, supporting the IBD Research and Awareness Act (H.R. 2275). Elizabeth volunteered at Camp Oasis, the CCFA’s residential summer camp for kids and teens with Crohn’s and colitis, as well as other related diseases. Because of her work with the CCFA, she and other Crohn’s and colitis patients were allowed to run in the New York City Marathon in 2015.
Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents, Billy Joe and Martha Isabel (Young) Stephenson. Those left to cherish her memory are her beloved husband, Robert “Bobby” C. Long; stepchildren, Robert Long (Emily), Ragan Gaskin (Jeffrey), Rachel Richardson (J.R.), Jared Long and Benjamin Long; two sisters, Susan Contreras (Eduardo) and Sonya Stanley; nieces, Renee Contreras, Jenna Stanley, Jamie Stanley, and Mia Stanley; nephew, Rod Contreras; stepmother, Helen Stephenson; and mother-in-law, Delores Long; as well as a host of friends, whose lives she touched over the years. She was loved by all and will be missed by all who knew her.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, August 13, 2024 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM. The funeral service will be Wednesday, August 14, 2024 at 1:00 PM at New Genesis Baptist Church with Pastor Steve Wagers officiating.
