Charles Glenn McKelvey III, age 72, passed away on Saturday, October 12, 2024. He was born October 22, 1951, in Atlanta, Georgia, to Charles Glenn McKelvey II and Mary Baggett McKelvey. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Eddie McKelvey.
Charles leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and unforgettable memories. He is survived by his loving wife of 14 years, Teresa McKelvey; his children, Luke McKelvey and Meghan (Jake) Harris; and his three grandchildren, Jack Harris, age 10, Aaryn Harris, age 7, and Riley Harris, age 5.
Professionally, Charles was committed to his career as an optometrist, earning his Doctor of Optometry from the Southern College of Optometry after obtaining his BS in Microbiology and Zoology from the University of Georgia. While in optometry school, he was named to the Gold Key International Optometric Honor Society, the highest leadership honor society attainable by an optometric student. He was twice elected to Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges and received recognition as an Outstanding Young Man of America for outstanding professional achievement, superior leadership ability, and exceptional service to the community. Charles started his own private practice, Total Eye Care, in Douglasville, and helped open the Pearle Vision in Carrollton. He cherished his relationships with his patients and took pride in providing them exceptional care.
Charles had an adventurous spirit and a zest for life that was evident in all he did. He was an avid racquetball player, thriving on competition and fellowship at local tournaments. His love for sports extended to his unwavering support for the University of Georgia football team, where he celebrated every victory they had. A history buff at heart, Charles was particularly fascinated with American history and the Civil War. He often shared stories of his grandfather, who proudly served in the Douglasville County Sheriff’s Office from 1911 to 1932, a legacy that filled him with pride. In his free time, Charles loved riding motorcycles, embracing the thrill of the open road. His warmth and genuine interest in people meant he never met a stranger; he could converse with anyone and leave a lasting impression.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, October 19, 2024, at 1:00 PM from the Whitley Garner Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM until the hour of service. Charles will be laid to rest at the Douglasville City Cemetery following the service.
