He was born on September 25th, 1943 in Jackson, Mississippi, to the late Cecil Gray Clegg, Sr. and Winnie Estelle Gardner Clegg. He was the youngest of four siblings born to this union. He was reared in Ellisville, Mississippi. He was a graduate of Mississippi College, where he was an All-Star member of the track team, and New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.
He was ordained into the ministry in Macon, Georgia in 1969. For more than fifty years, he served as pastor of churches primarily in Georgia and also in Mississippi and Illinois. His most recent pastorates were at Central Baptist Church in Lawrenceville, Georgia and Heritage Baptist Church in Douglasville, Georgia, followed by 10 years of ministry as a transitional pastor.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers; James Franklin Clegg, and Dr. Lawrence Clegg; and sister; Emma Gene Clegg.
He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Ann Clegg; sons; Cecil (Trey) Gray Clegg, III, Reverend Jody (Kathy) Clegg, and Wade (Monica) Clegg; seven grandchildren; Jacob, Aidan, Ryan, Caleb, Lily, Olivia, and Cassi.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, November 3, from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM.
A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, November 4, at Ephesus Baptist Church at 11:00 AM with Dr. Billy Godwin and Dr. Frank Nuckolls officiating. Choral music will begin prior to the service at 10:30 AM.
Interment will be Monday, November 6 at 11:00 AM, at Riverside Cemetery, 1301 Riverside Drive, Macon, GA 31201.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, November 8, 2023 from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Palmetto Park Senior Living Community.
