Mark Harry Siegel

Mark Siegel passed early Wednesday morning, October 5th, during Yom Kippur, at the age of 81. Mark was an accomplished aeronautical engineer, who had a distinguished 30 year career working for Grumman, with a majority of those years serving as the Director of Flight Sciences. Under his stewardship, his team played key roles in the development of numerous ground-breaking technologies. One of the most significant was the forward-swept wing used on the F-14, the most successful war plane in history. Some other noteworthy contributions include work on the Gulfstreams II & III, and the Shuttle Training Aircraft. Mark was passionate about all things having to do with aeronautics and astronautics, and could identify any plane in the sky, just by its sound.

Mark was a gifted storyteller, an avid reader of nonfiction, and a world traveler who visited almost every state in the country, and numerous countries around the world. He also enjoyed all outdoor activities, and spent much of his adult years playing golf and sailing on his Sunfish.

Mark was a devoted husband, father, father-in-law, and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Penny Siegel, daughters Jodie Cohen, Renée Haber, and Barri Elkins, sons-in-law Adam Haber and Bill Elkins, 13 grandchildren, and his sister, Marlene Kern.
