We are saddened to announce that Retired Fire Chief and Veteran member Robert (Bob) Sweeney passed away on May 31, 2024.
Bob proudly and selflessly served the community as an active member for over 50 years (1972-2023). During this time, Bob moved through our officer ranks and was elected as Fire Chief in 1980 where he served 12 consecutive terms. He returned to the role again from 1999 to 2006. In total, Bob faithfully served as the department’s Fire Chief for 19 years.
Upon retiring from active service, he moved onto our Veteran members list with a desire to help shape the next generation of volunteer firefighters.
Being a volunteer firefighter was both a passion and calling for Bob. This was reflected in his acts of answering emergency calls, performing fire investigations and serving the community he loved. He enjoyed passing on his knowledge to younger generations of firefighters, closely mentoring them as they learned the craft. Whether instructing a training session, cracking a joke or simply re-telling stories of previous fires, Bob loved being around the fire station and his extended firefighting family. He loved his family and friends, working in the blueberry field and meeting with all the customers. He always supported his sons, listening to our hobbies worries, concerns and gave amazing advice.
While Bob will be truly missed by all that knew him, we know that he’ll continue serving with us in spirit.
Bob is survived by his wife Pauline, sons Robert (Beverly Brace) Sweeney, Ashmore; Patrick (Christa) Sweeney, Bridgetown; sisters Annie (Gary) Warren, Bear River; Maria (Rick) Amero ,Marshalltown; and grandson Zeke. A Fire Fighters Funeral will be held 11am, Saturday June 15, 2024 from the Havelock Wesleyan Church with Shawn Craven officiating with burial in Holy Cross Cemetery, Plympton. Donations in memory can be made to the Plympton and Gilberts Cove Volunteer Fire Dept.
Rest easy brother, we’ll take it from here.
