John was a proud PPCLI, the King’s Crown , Korea Veteran, and a true blue Newfoundlander. (Yes, he moved to Canada before Newfoundland was part of Canada.) He spent much of his life in uniform, proudly serving Canada in more than one capacity, attaining the rank of Sergeant in the Regular Forces. Jumping out of planes and teaching people how to survive in the North, (he created and developed the Northern survival training course for Canada’s military). He was the Base Safety Officer and helped design the obstacle at CFB Cornwallis. He served as the supply officer to the Annapolis Army Cadet Core, having the ability to find whatever was needed for the Core. He played Santa for many organizations. He was a lifetime member of the Clementsport Legion and much, much more. He also received a commission for the rank of Captain in the Reserves before he retired. John did more in life than most people have the chance to do. In his spare time he enjoyed fly fishing when he was younger, tied his own flies, travelled. He liked spending time with friends at the cottage, having a really good laugh and so much more. He had forgotten more than many of us will ever know, before Alzheimer’s disease took away his memories. Oh, but how he hated snakes… causing a few good laughs over this fear through the years. He will be missed by so many, and there will never be another person like him. John was the person everyone loved and could count on. John saw the good in everyone, even if it was just that they are a good example of what you don’t want to be LOL. He leaves behind 2 sons, Kevin, Digby; Paul, Bridgetown; daughters, Margaret, Digby; Nancy and Jillian both of Halifax; brothers, Frank, Harold, Eugene, and Joe; sister, Marie; grandchildren, Scott, Ben, Eoin and Samantha; great- grandchildren Orion, Arianna. Jack and Charlie; many nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by his two wives, Jean and Gloria, his son, Eoin; grandson, Brandon; sisters, Freda and Muriel and 1 brother in infancy.
