David was born in Lansing, MI and graduated from Pewamo-Westphalia Community Schools in 1967. His career at Consumers Energy spanned an impressive 39 years, until his retirement in 2006. David's passion for advocacy and fairness led him to become deeply involved with the union, where he served as an active and respected member. Over the years, he held leadership positions as president of the UWUA Local 123 and vice president of the MSUWC state council.
Beyond his professional achievements, David was known for his vast knowledge on a wide array of subjects, his skill in woodworking, and his love for camping and golf. He had a knack for storytelling, captivating listeners with his anecdotes and wisdom. Despite his imposing stature, David was affectionately known as a gentle giant, always ready to offer a helping hand or a listening ear to those in need.
One of David's greatest joys in life was attending his grandchildren's events, where he cheered them on with pride and unwavering support. His presence and encouragement will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
David was survived by his loving wife of 48 years: Judith "Judy" Thelen; children: Scott (Kristi) LeVeque, Ross (Miriam) Thelen, Gretchen (Paul) Zimmerman, Deidra (Christopher) Gamble and Ashley (Kevin) Gilleo; grandchildren: Anna, Melina, Benjamin, Talia, Trevor, Maxwell, Lydia, Eliana, Tessa, Zachary, Juliette, Jude and Louie; siblings: Denise (David) Cushion, Nancy Jo (Doug Johnston) Bissell, and Jane (Jim) Bierstetel; brother and sister-in-laws: Maureen Thelen, Alice Thelen, Sue Smith, Mary Jane Smith, Patricia Smith, Wilma Whitehead and Peter (Linda) Smith; and many special nieces and nephews.
David is preceded in death by his parents: Gerald and Winifred Thelen; brothers: Bruce Thelen, Jerry Thelen and Russell Thelen; father and mother-in-law: Reynold and Irene Smith; and brother and sister-in-laws: Arlene (Hilary) Schafer, Roy (Arline) Smith, Delbert Smith, Catherine Smith, Alice Smith, Dennis Smith, Joyce Thelen and Grover Whitehead.
A visitation for David will be held Thursday, June 27th, 2024 from 3pm - 7pm at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, 205. E. Washington Street, DeWitt, MI 48820. A funeral mass will be held Friday, June 28th, 2024 at 11:00am with a visitation one hour prior at Catholic Community of St. Jude, 801 N. Bridge Street, DeWitt, MI 48820.
