Reverend Heung Soo Kim

Reverend Heung Soo Kim, a beloved husband, loving father, grandfather, and cherished brother passed away peacefully on March 28, 2025, in Northbrook, IL, at the age of 86. Born on November 15, 1938, in Korea, his life was a testament to his unwavering faith and selfless service.

Reverend Kim is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Dr. Mi Ja Kim. He was the cherished father of Yoon Hi Greene and her husband Kevin Greene, and Joe Kim and his wife Carmen Kim. His legacy continues through his adoring grandsons: Dillon and Connor Greene, and Matthew, Alex, and Daniel Kim. He is also survived by his brothers, In Soo Kim and Hyun Soo Kim, and his sister, Hei Ryun Lee. He was preceded in death by his brother, Chul Soo Kim. He was a constant source of love, support, and guidance for his family, who will deeply miss his presence, wisdom, and unwavering love.

He graduated from Kyungbock High School and Yonsei University in Seoul Korea. In 1966, he immigrated to the United States with his wife to answer his calling to the ministry and to attend Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. After receiving a Masters in Divinity, he later attended Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary where he received a Doctoral Degree in Ministry.

In 1971, Reverend Kim founded Alliance Fellowship Church, which was the first bi-lingual (Korean and English) church in the area, and created the Bible Tape Ministry, which was shared internationally. He later founded Cornerstone Church in 1992. He was a passionate youth evangelist who traveled the world and a gifted orator whose sermons resonated deeply with his congregations. In retirement, Reverend Kim continued his ministry by traveling to Rwanda with his wife and founded JOY Missions International in 2014 where he built a church community center for widows and orphans of the genocide. His children will continue the work of the JOY Missions International ministry.

Reverend Kim's legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched with his faith, his service, and his profound love for God. His body was donated to UIC College of Medicine to be used for educational purposes.

He lived by the words of his favorite Bible verse, Philippians 1:20-21: "I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death. For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.”

A memorial service to celebrate Reverend Kim's life will be held at Alliance Fellowship Church (665 Grand Canyon St., Hoffman Estates, IL) on Sunday, April 6, 2025 at 3:00 p.m.

김흥수 목사 박사

신앙과 봉사의 삶

사랑하는 남편, 사랑하는 아버지, 할아버지, 소중한 형제였던 김흥수 목사는 2025년 3월 28일 일리노이주 노스브룩에서 86세의 나이로 평화롭게 세상을 떠났습니다. 1938년 11월 15일 한국에서 태어난 그의 삶은 흔들리지 않는 신앙과 사심 없는 봉사의 증거였습니다. 

김 목사님의 유족으로는 61년 동안 사랑해 온 아내 김미자 박사가 있습니다. 그는 윤희 그린과 그녀의 남편 케빈 그린, 그리고 조 김과 그의 아내 카르멘 김의 소중한 아버지였습니다. 그의 유산은 사랑하는 손자들인 Dillon Greene과 Connor Greene, 그리고 Matthew, Alex, Daniel Kim을 통해 계속됩니다. 유족으로는 동생 김인수, 김현수 형제와 여동생 이혜련선생이 있습니다. 그의 형님 김철수장로님은 먼저 세상을 떠나셨읍니다. 그의 지혜, 흔들리지 않는 사랑은 유족들에게 끊임없는 사랑, 지원, 지도의 원천이었습니다.

그는 경복고등학교와 연세대 정외과를 졸업하고, 1966년에 그는 사역에 대한 하나님의 부르심에 응답하고 트리니티 복음주의 신학교에 다니기 위해 아내와 함께 미국으로 이민하여 목회학 석사 (MDiv)  그리고 게렛 복음주의 신학교 목회학 박사 (DMin) 학위를 받았습니다.

1971년 김 목사는 지역 최초의 이중 언어 (한글과 영어) 교회인 얼라이언스 펠로우십 교회 (Alliance Fellowship Church) 를 설립하고, 성경 테이프 사역 (Bible Tape Ministry)을 창설해 국제적으로 말씀을 전파했습니다. 1992년에 Cornerstone Church를 설립했습니다. 그는 세계를 여행한 열정적인 청소년 전도자였으며 그의 설교는 회중들에게 깊은 울림을 준 은헤로운  연설가였습니다. 은퇴 후에도 김 목사는 아내와 함께 르완다로가서 1년동안 사역을 이어갔고, 2014년 JOY Mission International을 설립하여 대량학살로 인해 생긴 과부와 고아들을 위한 커뮤니티 센터와 교육관을 건립했고 아들 조김과 딸 윤희 그린이 대를 이어 르완다 사역을 계속할것입니다.  김목사의 유산은 그가 신앙과 봉사, 하나님 향한 깊은 사랑으로 감동시킨 수많은 삶을 통해 계속 이어질 것입니다. 김 목사님의 시신은 UIC 의과대학에 기증하여 학생들의 교육에 쓰임을 받게 되었습니다.

그는 자신이 가장 좋아하는 성경 구절인 빌립보서 1장 20-21절의 말씀에 따라 살았습니다. “내가 아무 일에든지 부끄러워하지 아니하고, 전과 같이 지금도 담대하여 살든지 죽든지 내 몸에서 그리스도가 존귀하게 되게 되기를 간절히 기대하고 소망하노라. 이는 내게 사는 것이 그리스도니 죽는 것도 유익함이라.”

김 목사님의 생애를 기념하는 추모식이 2025년 4월 6일 일요일 오후 3시에 Alliance Fellowship Church 665 Grand Canyon St, Hoffman Estates, IL 60169 에서 있겠습니다.
