He was born in Denver, Colorado on September 14, 1933. Jim graduated from Adams City High School.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years Evelyn F. Beren (Kopf).
He is also survived by his children – Kathleen and Mark Honomichl, Michelle Beren and Robert Biggart, Kevin and Jessica Beren.
He had 5 grandchildren who were the apple of his eye - Morgan and Madison Biggart, Kaitlyn and Kristine Honomichl, and Emily Beren.
He is also survived by his brothers John D. Beren and Leonard McKay and sisters Teri and Vivian.
He had several nieces, nephews, cousins and good friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents John F. Beren and Hazel E. Beren (Hoover) and his step-mother Irene Beren (McKay), his nieces Tiffany Oliver (Beren) and Jan McKay, sister-in-law Shirley A. McKay and his in-laws Michael and Eva Kopf. And several good friends.
Jim joined the Navy in 1956 and received his honorable discharge on December 17, 1959. Jim received the Medal of Honor and Good Conduct Medal. Jim was stationed on the USS North Hampton based in Norfolk, VA.
He met Evelyn Kopf thru her Uncle, Super Chief John Shatinsky, USN and they were married on January 23rd, 1960 in the Bronx, New York.
The couple came back to live in Colorado. They ultimately settled into a house in Commerce City 6 months into their marriage and Jim lived there until he went into Hospice Care on December 10th, 2013.
Jim retired in October 1998 from Safeway Grocers after 45 years of working in the warehouse off of I-70 and Dahlia. He also work part time jobs to make ends meet mostly for Dr. John and Shirley Norton, Ray Kerr and Jack Grunwald hauling race and show horses thru out Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado.
Jim was an avid NASCAR fan, his favorite drivers were Dale Sr. (RIP), Bill Elliot and Ernie Irvan. Jim was also a big fan of TV Western shows and Western Movies, especially John Wayne (RIP) movies.
After Jim retired he enjoyed taking his Grandkids to school and spending time with them in the mornings in the car and in the pre-school classroom. He was always willing to play with the Grandkids. He even let the girls play beauty shop and he was their ‘client’. He let them be the doctor and give him his insulin shot and his pills. He always kept dollar bills easily available to pay the kids for their ‘work’.
Jim and Evelyn were proud and happy to take the responsibility of providing free day care for their 5 adorable but rambunctious Grandbabies from 6 weeks old to Pre-School.
All five of the Grandkids will have special memories of them and ‘Pa’.
