Jo Barnes passed away at Aurora South Medical Center on Saturday March 31, 2012. She had been battling Leukemia after long struggles with Breast Cancer and Lymphoma. Funeral Services will be at 8:30AM Friday April 6th at Gateway Christian Church 14700 E Mississippi Ave Aurora, CO. At 10:30AM there will be an interment at Ft. Logan National Cemetery 4400 W Kenyon Ave Denver, CO. There will be a reception following the interment at Gateway Christian Church.
Jo was proceeded in death by her Parents Vance and Forest Nelson of Wyandotte, OK; sisters Dee Griffith of Springfield, MO and Carma Leta Handcock of Tulsa, OK; daughter-in-law Cindy Barnes of Aurora. She was survived by her loving husband Freddie of Aurora, sons Gene(Pat) Barnes and Doug Barnes both of Aurora; Brothers Buddy of Wyandotte, OK and Doyle “Butch” (Sandra) Nelson of Raeford, NC; Sister Rhonda Nelson of Tulsa, OK; Grandchildren Brooke (Tuan) Cao of Highlands Ranch, Courtney Barnes of Olympia, WA, Brittney (Brady) O’Neill of Aurora, Tyler (Allie) Barnes of Aurora; Great-Grandchildren Patrick O’Neill and Jackson Barnes; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Jo was born in Wyandotte, OK on July 10th, 1936. She was a proud member of the Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma. She married the love of her life Freddie on 10-31-53. She was an Air Force wife for 21 years traveling around the US and as far a Guam making a home for her family. She eventually settled in Aurora, CO where she spent the last 40 years of her life. She was a department manager for Montgomery Wards at Buckingham Mall and spent 15+ years designing and selling jewelry for Direct Line Imports.
Jo was a devout member of Gateway Christian Church in Aurora, CO. She enjoyed “Cruisin’” and Car Shows with her husband and family. She enjoyed camping in the 5th wheel with her husband and visiting friends and family along the way. She loved her Ladies Club, the South East Sweets, and has been a member for the last two decades. She loved entertaining and enjoyed having the home that was the center of activity. She simply adored her Great-Grandsons and she will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
