My deepest condolences on Steve’s passing. I learned so much from him as a young attorney during my time at STK — he was a phenomenal attorney and a good friend. So sad to hear of this news.

“Larger than life and one of a kind.”   Cliches tailor made for Steve Long, evidenced by the first words spoken by everyone hearing of his tragic passing.

I am a nerdy appellate lawyer privileged to have battled Steve (over Denver Broncos ownership) and to have joined with Steve (over alleged DIA bribery).  Steve’s colorful personality masked his formidable intellect; his trial skills were amazing to observe as both an opponent and teammate.

I am saddened beyond words.

Steve was a good friend for over three decades. He will be greatly missed. 

Steve hired me into my current firm, for which I will forever be grateful.  We worked closely for several years, and he consistently brought in the most fascinating cases I have ever seen.  As a lawyer, and in life, he was simply a force of nature.  

By sheer charisma and personality, he seemed like he would, and almost always did, accomplish anything and everything, including what for anyone else would have been impossible.

Several years ago, I went to trial with Steve for three weeks.  He gave the opening.  There could not have been more argument in that opening statement.  Indeed, he even told the jury—“How much should you award?  Let me tell you how much you should award! . . .”  The entire opening was clearly objectionable.  I kept subtly looking around the courtroom while he was giving it, at the judge, at opposing counsel, waiting for an inevitable objection.  No one said a thing.  Any other lawyer would have drawn an objection, but not him.  Not Steve Long.  After all, this is Steve Long.  The Steve Long, trial lawyer.  At the next recess, I told him “I think that was the best closing I’ve ever seen, and we haven’t even started trial yet.”

Since Steve appeared capable of anything just by willing it, I remain in shock that he did not cheat death as well.  I am still struggling with what seemed inconceivable.  I thought his star would burn blindingly bright forever.  The world now seems boring.  Steve, we will miss you.


Steve was a family friend in the best sense: he was a close friend for decades with our Denver family, but was also instinctively and genuinely welcoming when Sylvi joined us via marriage.
Steve was one of the most authentically companionable people one could meet. Although we understand that he was a formidable lawyer in the courtroom, in more relaxed social circumstances he was gregarious. interested in others, and wide-ranging in his conversation. It was always our pleasure to share a dinner with him whenever we visited Denver.
He was also a man of great humor and wit. What we will most miss about him is his ability to tell a great story, mixing both amusement and insight.
He was a good man, and he lived well; and we will miss him.   

Knew him as an acquaintance and he became a friend through a very  close friend of his.  He was always fun loving, caring  and showed compassion  in times of  personal difficulty  others  might be experiencing.  He frequently talked about his kids and expressed such love for them. We will really miss him and the joy he radiated.  

We will miss the special times we experienced together and wish his family comfort and peace in this time of loss -
