Charles W. Wood, Sr. was born July 13rd, 1925 in Richmond, Virginia and died March 1, 2015 from complications due to kidney failure. He was born to the late James Wood and Leonora Butler. Charles grew up and attended school in Richmond, Virginia. He then enlisted in The United States Army / Air force as Private First Class where he performed routine patrols as a Military Police Officer. While serving Charles was promoted to Specialist Cook, he had a passion for cooking and was an exemplary cook; his chef quality meals were enjoyed by servicemen of all ranks. When Charles left the Army he would go on to share his distinctive style of cooking with his bride; Charles and Lavada Wood were married on July 7, 1952, and together they raised four children. In addition to being a cook; Charles was also a skillful professional painter for nearly 60 years. We have great admiration for his ability as a painter; he was a visual artist with a creative ability to see the end of a project before he started the job. Charles promoted his talent as a painter year after year to a business owner or a home owner in order to provide a comfortable lifestyle for his wife and children. He also took the time to pass on his knowledge of interior design to his sons and grandson. Charles gave his life to God and was baptized August 25, 1997 at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church in Phoenix, Arizona. In 1999 Charles became an enthusiastic member of the Shorter Community AME Church for over 15 years. Charles was proud of the position he held as Steward of Shorter. He demonstrated that pride through dedication and faithful service every Sunday. After retirement Charles was then awarded the honorary title of Steward Emeritus; the highest honor bestowed only by the Pastor. Charles was loved and well respected by all three Pastors he served under. Not only was Charles a long-standing member; he painted Shorter Community AME Church many times over the years. Charles was diligent his entire life; he worked until he was 80 years old. Even at the age of 90; he managed to stay busy and was continuously looking for the next project to embark upon, but equally important to him was the desire to be relevant for his family. Charles W. Wood, Sr. is preceded in death by Lavada Wood; his loyal wife of 61 years. He was firm but kind to the children he leaves to mourn his passing, three daughters: Cherilyn Franklin Parlato who preceded him in death, Sheila D. Harris (James) of Phoenix, Arizona, Adrienne A. Surratt of Columbia, Maryland and two sons: Charles W. Wood Jr. (Dalita) of Denver, Colorado, James F. Wood (Becky) of Austin Texas, two brothers: Curtis L. Wood and Charles Holly, both of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Charles was loved by eight grandchildren as well as five great-grandchildren and a host of other nieces, nephews and family members.
The Wood family would like to thank everyone for the many expressions of love. We cannot thank you enough for your love and sincere concern. The greatest source of our comfort has been the abundant prayers we received; your benevolent prayers continue to help us through our sorrow. Although Charles has left this life and is not still present in body; we will not forget his love of family and diligent spirit. Our Father and Grandfather Charles W. Wood, Sr. stands at the gate Lord, you can rest now Dad, in the loving arms of Our Heavenly Father.
