It is with profound sadness that we share with you the death of Jerome Ira “Jerry” Solkoff, Esq., a lifelong advocate for the elderly and disabled. Jerry died at home on November 18, surrounded by his loving family.
Jerry enjoyed a distinguished professional life spanning more than four decades, as the founder of Jerome Ira Solkoff, P.A., and later, of counsel at Solkoff Legal, P.A. Jerry was an inaugural member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) and was Certified as an Elder Law Specialist by both the National Elder Law Foundation and The Florida Bar. His many accomplishments included co-founding the Elder Law Section of the Florida Bar in 1991, assisting in the creation of the Academy of Florida Elder Law Attorneys (AFELA), creating a the “Ladybird Deed”, and countless successful efforts lobbying state officials and winning court battles to provide more and better services for the elderly and disabled. Jerry also served as President of the State Alzheimer’s Public Policy Task Force, Chair of the Elder Law Section of the Florida Bar, and as a member of the Florida Bar Elder Law Section, Real Property, Probate and Trust Law Section, Florida State Guardianship Association, American Bar Association, and through the years, chaired and served on countless committees within. Jerry received numerous honors for his advocacy on behalf of the elderly during his lifetime, including Advocate of the Year in 2003 by the Broward County Legal Aid Society, a Lifetime Achievement Award presented in 2011 by the Elder Law Section of the Florida Bar, and the Florida Assisted Living Coalition (FALC) Icon Award in 2012. During his lifetime, Jerry proudly amassed thousands of hours of pro bono services within the community.
Jerry is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Doreen, his son, Scott Solkoff, (fiancée Aviva Bass), his daughter, Anne Weinstein (husband Andrew), and four grandchildren, Amanda, Matthew, Jacob, and Lola.
Funeral Services will be held on Monday, November 21 at noon at the Star of David Chapel located at 7701 Bailey Road, North Lauderdale, FL 33068.
The family will be accepting Shiva visitors directly following the cemetery service at the Solkoff residence on Monday, November 21st until 8:30 pm as well as Tuesday and Wednesday from 4:00 - 8:30 pm. We will be holding minyan prayers at 7:00 pm each evening.
