Tom was born in Shelby, Ohio to Joseph L. and Mary E. Metzger on March 1, 1929. He attended Catholic schools in Louisville, Ohio and served in the Ohio National Guard before moving to South Florida in 1948, where he began a lifelong career as a self-made businessman and manufacturer of windows and doors. With his father, a civil engineer, he designed and patented the first storm window in South Florida. He married Betty Sullivan of Louisville, Kentucky in 1956 in Miami. With her support, Tom built and managed several businesses, including TM Products and Royal Palm Business Center of Pompano Beach, Weather Products of Miami, and Tucker Aluminum of Moultrie, Georgia. He was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Deerfield Beach, a longtime member of Serra International and supporter of vocations, a Knight of Malta, a born salesman, and an avid golfer.
Tom is preceded in death by Betty, his beloved wife of 62 years and his brothers Joseph (Betty), John (Irene), James (Francis), and Charles (Bonnie).
Tom is survived by his sons Michael (Marianne), Thomas S., John (Kathy), Steven (Rachel), and daughters Patricia Schapley (Ramon) and Katherine Metzger; grandchildren Michelle (Patrick), Michael (April), Matthew, Erika (Justin), Morgan, Jack, Sterling, Sadie, Ray, Christa, Aimee and great-grandchildren Parker, Carson, Charlotte, Natalie, Everett, and Quinn; his sisters Katherine Park (Richard), Martha Heimbach (George), Mary Ieradi (Joseph), and Monica Atkins (Mike); and numerous nephews and nieces.
Visitation will be 3:00 to 5:30 pm on Sunday, October 6 at Kraaer-Becker Funeral Home in Deerfield Beach. A Funeral Mass will be held Monday, October 7, 9:30 am at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Deerfield Beach and Burial Service on Tuesday, October 8, 10 am at Our Lady Queen of Heaven Cemetery.
